LIFE WITHOUT SUBTRACTION

A semiring is an algebraic structure essentially like that of a ring, except that additive inverses may not always exist. Semirings have proven extremely applicable in mathematics, sytems theory, and theoretical computer science. This talk presents an introduction to this theory and to a selection of these applications.
