Dr. Kaasik has been working in University of Tartu
since 2001, in the Institute of Environmental Physics, being responsibe for the
development, application and validation of air pollution dispersion and
deposition models. He is the main developer of the Estonian local/urban air
quality model AEROPOL and member of the HIRLAM meteorological model development
team of the University of Tartu.
1.
Mathematical modelling
of atmospheric pollution. Practical experience in development and application
of air pollution models of local, urban and regional scales. Extensive
experience in the related fields – model verification (incl. field
experiments), data analysis, computer experiments, etc.
2.
Managing of national
and participation in international scientific and application projects.
Practical experience in organization and follow-up of a model validation
project (3 years, participants from 3 institutes), executing international
negotiations.
3.
Co-ordination and
management of a group of 3-5 people. Practical experience in organization of
work on the model validation and fieldwork targeted at model validation and
refining.
4.
Participation in many
cases of environmental impact assessment: general plans of cities, traffic
planning, licensing the industrial releases, environmental risk analysis.
5.
Managing the
environmental service of a medium-sized municipality. Solving the entire
complexity of environmental problems (increasing amounts of solid waste,
stricter standards for water quality, air quality impact of tremendously
increasing number of vehicles) of a city in conditions of transitional economy.
6.
Expertise in a wide
range of software on MS Windows and Linux platforms: statistical procedures,
GIS, programming in traditional and visual environments.
Dr.
Kaasik is the author of 36 scientific publications; 14 of these have been
published in refereed journals and compilation works. He has given over 20
lectures and presentations at scientific and application confereces. He has a
teaching experience at the University of Tartu (courses “Atmospheric hygiene
and transport of air wastes” and “Numerical methods in meteorology”).
1.
Member of the European
Association of Air Pollution Science (EURASAP),
1999-c.m.
2.
Member of the Estonian Physical Society, 1994-c.m.
Dr. Kaasik has played key roles in the following
research projects:
1. Air pollution modelling and forecast. Grant of the Estonian Science Foundation No. 186,
1994- 1997. Main developer.
2. Quantification of alkaline and acidifying
deposition loads from Estonian industry, 1999-2001. Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, 330341 FIM. Project
coordinator (Estonian side).
3. Interaction of
forest and atmospheric fly ash influx. Grant of the Estonian
Science Foundation No. 5002, 2002-2004, 276 000 EEK. Principal
investigator.
