About
Jaak Vilo is an Estonian computer scientist and bioinformatician. He was elected Head of the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Tartu, with a term beginning on 1 January 2026, and has been a professor at the university since 2007. He is also Vice President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Academy, and chairs its Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Brain. He completed doctoral studies in computer science at the University of Helsinki (PhD, 2002), and has worked at EMBL‑EBI (1999–2002). His work connects computer science with the life sciences through algorithms and data analysis.
