Viivikonna Ghost Town

Story

Viivikonna was built in 1955 by German prisoners of war, who were also used as workforce elsewhere in the Soviet Union. It is estimated that population capacity peaked at around 9000 citizens. After the closure of shale mine in 1957, population of Viivikonna was constantly decreasing and as of 2019, 55 citizens live there. Over time, people left leaving houses and flats unattended which as a result attracted looters, who stripped down the city of valuable materials.

How to get there?

Viivikonna is located in North-Eastern part of Estonia, circa 10km from Sillamäe.
